Yossi Milo Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of color photographs by Alessandra Sanguinetti from the ongoing series, The Adventures of Guille and Belinda and the Enigmatic Meaning of Their Dreams. The exhibition will open on Thursday, September 9, and close on Saturday, October 23, with a reception for the artist on Thursday, September 9, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. This exhibition will be Ms. Sanguinetti's first solo show in the United States.
In 1999, Alessandra Sanguinetti began working on a series of photographs which register the saga of two young cousins named Guille and Belinda, then nine and ten years old. Cultivating an intimate relationship with the pair over the past five years, Sanguinetti collaborates with the girls to construct images fueled by the dreams, fantasies, and fears that accompany the psychological and physical transition from childhood to adulthood.
Sanguinetti's photographs include both staged theatrical constructions and spontaneous recreations of childhood fantasies. With the Argentinean countryside as their backdrop, Guille and Belinda use costumes, props, and their imaginations to produce visual tableaux imbued with references to art and literature that explore the diffuse boundary between fantasy and reality.
Alessandra Sanguinetti was born in New York City in 1968 and currently lives and works in both Buenos Aires and New York City. Her work has been exhibited extensively abroad, including a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires, and is part of several collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Museum of Modern Art, Buenos Aires. She has been awarded numerous grants and prizes, including a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship in 2000 and a Hasselblad Foundation Grant in 2001.
