Mona Kuhn: Bare

Yossi Milo Gallery (formerly known as Gallery 24) is pleased to present the first solo exhibition in New York of the photographer Mona Kuhn. Entitled Bare, the exhibition opens on Thursday, November 1 and closes on Saturday, December 8, 2001.

The exhibition consists of black-and-white photographs, which were inspired by the raw qualities of charcoal drawings of nudes. Eschewing the studio, Ms. Kuhn uses only natural light, and she photographs her models in outdoor settings where nudity is accepted. (All of the images in this exhibition were photographed in France, Germany, and California.)

Ms. Kuhn's models span the spectrum of social standing-a fact difficult to determine in the absence of clothing, jewelry, and other indicia of status-and the artist has photographed every model in this exhibition many times over the years. Each photograph is thus the product of a lasting relationship, and is more a collaboration with, than a detached depiction of, the model. All of the photographs in the exhibition are 15″ × 15″ gelatin silver prints.

Born in Brazil in 1969, Mona Kuhn has had solo shows in Berlin, Sao Paolo, San Francisco, and Seattle. In celebration of Ms. Kuhn's first solo show in New York, the gallery will host a reception for the artist from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2.
