Ibrahim Said's Floating Vase 9 has joined the permanent collection of the Colby Museum of Art. The vase is one of Said’s distinctive, delicate ceramic works that connect ancient ceramic traditions to the modern day. Born and raised in Cairo, Egypt, the artist was immersed in ceramic traditions throughout his childhood, and learned the foundations of his technique from his father. These traditions show in the intricate carving that adorns many of Said’s vessels, which also leaves them lost to pure function. Allowing light and air to pass through the sides of the works, Floting Vase 9 appears to levitate above its base in an impossible shape.
