Anoushka Mirchandani will create bold new works embodying her unique artistic vision, set to premiere at FOG Design+Art this January 2025.
Anoushka Mirchandani deploys her painting practice as an act of agency, selecting elements of her identity and relocating them in new contexts under novel circumstances. At the age of 18, Mirchandani emigrated from India to the United States, where she discovered new liberties as a woman, but also grappled with her newfound identity as an immigrant and the parts of herself she was forced to leave behind.
The artist’s work explores a visual language of code-switching to navigate her multifaceted identity. Mirchandani’s figurative paintings depict intimate moments, often featuring women in relaxed, unapologetic poses, challenging societal expectations of modesty. Their bodies—partially blending into the background with oilstick or pastel outlines—create a striking contrast between boldness and disappearance. This juxtaposition raises questions about self-suppression and expression, especially for immigrants and women under patriarchal norms. Through her art, Mirchandani captures the tension between rebellion and assimilation, giving form to these complex, layered experiences.
