Photographs by Ezra Stoller are included in The Tuskegee Chapel: Paul Rudolph X Fry & Welch, an exhibition that explores the story behind the landmarked Tuskegee Chapel (1960-1969), and the efforts of the architectural partnership that went into this understudied work of midcentury architecture.
The Tuskegee Chapel stands on the grounds of Tuskegee University, the HBCU in Macon County, AL. The Chapel's facade and interior were rendered in brick to match the surrounding buildings; translated into masonry by Louis Fry, Sr., and Col. John Welch, from Paul Rudolph's sculptural concrete forms.
The exhibition includes Stoller's iconic images of the Chapel from Architectural Record's 1969 cover story on the building alongside architectural models, rarely-seen construction drawings, concept sketches, a new interview with the last surviving member of the design team, and much more. The show coincides with Materialized Space: The Architecture of Paul Rudolph, a retrospective on Rudolph's legacy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
