The Phillips Collection Acquires work by Shikeith

Museum Acquisition
Shikeith's Visiting Hours (2022) has been acquired by The Phillips Collection in Washington D.C.

Visiting Hours was included in the group exhibition Essex Hemphill: Take care of your blessings at The Phillips Collection from May 17 through August 31, 2025. The exhibition explored the interdisciplinary relationship between the writings of poet, performer, and activist Essex Hemphill (1957–1995), and contemporary visual art. The artists included in the show knew or collaborated with Hemphill during his lifetime, or found inspiration in his artistic and political vision decades later.

Visiting Hours takes its title from a poem by Hemphill. The image is shot on expired film, marking a resurrection of material while depicting a spectral, shrouded figure atop another subject. Marking a doubled channeling, the work refers to this notion of haunting in multiple forms at once.
