Ibrahim Said at Wasserman Projects

Group Exhibition: Absence Takes Form

Works by Ibrahim Said are included in Absence Takes Form, a group exhibition at Wasserman Projects in Detroit, MI, opening today, January 31, and on view through April 4, 2026. “Absence Takes Form” is curated by Adrienne Spinozzi, Associate Curator in the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, and presented in partnership with the National Council on Education in the Ceramic Arts.

The works by Said included in “Absence Takes Form” span the wall-bound and the monumental, and show the artist’s marriage of futuristic engineering with ornamental traditions from Islamic and Ancient Egyptian art. “Gold Rings” shows off Said’s distinctive floating forms and intricate carved motifs. A selection of thirty-six elements from “The 99 Names of God” bear holy names from the Quran in calligraphic script.

From Wasserman Projects: “The exhibition explores how artists express their individual diasporic journeys in clay, taking its inspiration from Detroit, a place with a rich history shaped by the Great Migration. Featuring over 40 artists working in ceramics, this exhibition highlights the breadth of the medium.”
