Volutes, A Sculptural Light Installation by Yonathan Moore

Yonathan Moore Studio presents Volutes, a sculptural light installation created for NYCxDESIGN and presented at Yossi Milo Gallery, which will open with a reception on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 6:30 - 9:00 PM.

Developed using the Flux Metal Drape system, Volutes explores the expressive potential of continuously curved aluminum surfaces through a series of rippling forms. The installation investigates variations in wave frequency, rhythm, and proportion, producing sculptural geometries that fold and curl into themselves, creating concealed moments from which light softly emerges.

The work references two architectural languages separated by thousands of years. In plan, the spiraling geometries reference the volutes of classical Greek architecture : the scroll-like forms used in the ornamental capitals of Ionic columns. These curling geometries suggest inward movement and continuous flow. In elevation, the extruded volute surfaces are stacked into vertical compositions that nod to the opulence, rhythm, and layered ornamentation of Art Deco architecture.

The works balance softness and structure through the transformation of industrial aluminum extrusions into fluid, ribbon-like surfaces by producing two custom extrusions. Stacked wave formations create shifting reflections and gradients of light that continuously change as the viewer moves around the installation.

The pieces are presented in both polished mirror and warm textured aluminum finishes, emphasizing the interaction between light, reflection, and curvature. Together, the installation positions aluminum not only as an industrial material, but as a medium capable of visual softness, movement, and atmospheric depth.

Volutes continues Yonathan Moore Studio’s ongoing exploration of the Flux Metal Drape system as an architectural and sculptural language that merges fabrication, function, ornament, and fluid form.

Founded by designer and architect Yonathan Moore, the studio operates at the intersection of rigid industrial systems and fluid spatial experiences, exploring how precision-engineered materials can become expressive apparatuses that evoke softness, movement, and emotional resonance. Drawing from both architectural history and contemporary fabrication technologies, the practice investigates new formal and material possibilities across lighting, furniture, installation, and architectural-scale works.
