Samuel Fosso and Sanlé Sory at The Barbican Centre

Group Exhibition
Works by Samuel Fosso and Sanlé Sory are in the group exhibition Project a Black Planet at the Barbican Centre in London until September 9, 2026, co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and MACBA museum in Barcelona.

The exhibition explores the impact of Pan-Africanism on artistic and cultural production from the 1920s to the present. The symbolic site of Pan-Africa is presented not as a fixed territory but as a conceptual terrain where rupture, dissent, and collective imagination converge in the pursuit of emancipatory futures.

Fosso opened his studio at the age of thirteen in Bangui, creating self-portraits that explore African identities through clothing, costume, and impersonation, utilizing self-representation as a means of empowerment while deconstructing archetypes of African culture.

Sanlé Sory’s works portray the energy and aspirations of Burkina Faso’s youth in the wake of the nation’s independence from France in 1960- the same year he opened his studio.
