Yossi Milo is pleased to announce that Phaidon has published a monograph dedicated to the work of the celebrated Burkinabé photographer, Sanlé Sory.
Bringing together more than 200 photographs, Sanlé Sory offers the most comprehensive survey of the artists’ work to date. Over the course of three decades, Sory documented life in Bobo-Dioulasso through portraits made in his Volta Photo Portrait Studio, and photographs of the city’s vibrant nightlife. His images chronicle a period of profound social and cultural change, capturing the individuality, style, and aspirations of a generation, while creating and enduring record of post-colonial Africa.
The publication was developed with author Florent Mazzoleni, who has worked collaboratively with Sory for more than a decade, bringing the photographer’s work to an international audience. The volume includes previously unpublished photographs alongside newly commissioned essays by an international group of writers, curators, and scholars, offering new perspectives on Sory’s practice, and its significance within the history of photography.
For more than 60 years, Sory’s photographs have offered a vivid record of everyday life in Burkina Faso, and the vitality of a rapidly changing society. Today, his work is held in the collections of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and numerous other international institutions. Since beginning our collaboration with Sory, Yossi Milo Gallery has been honored to present his work through exhibitions and international fairs, helping to expand engagement with his remarkable photographic practice. The publication of Sanlé Sory marks an important milestone in the continued recognition of his enduring contribution to the history of photography.
