Yossi Milo is delighted to announce that Cameron Welch's monumental work Gravity Chasm (2022) is now installed in the lobby of 1 Penn Plaza.
Standing at 10 feet high by 24 feet wide, the work is a tremendous feat in labor, history, and penetrating vision. Its larger-than-life presentation swallows viewers, confronting them with an amalgam of figures, textures, patterns, and found objects. The centermost figure depicted is Icarus, mythical son of Daedalus who infamously flew too close to the sun. As legend has it, Icarus’ downfall was the result of his overconfidence in his synthetic wings, which melted mid-flight. The array of icons surrounding the downward-bound figure invites a plurality of interpretations that shift and change as the viewer moves around the work and takes in its vastness. This dynamic process of observation and comprehension is the natural result of Welch’s interest in the liminal: an undefined space where many parts can come together as one.
